1990, one of the most violent years in Colombia. The war against the state, declared by drug traffickers, shakes the country. Maruja Pachón, an independent woman, director of the government's film office, is about to make an important decision in her personal life. Her plans are postponed indefinitely when she ends up the victim of a kidnapping that changes her destiny forever. Her husband Alberto Villamizar, a congressman and staunch enemy of drug trafficking, knows that the group "Los Extraditables" is behind her kidnapping. Maruja is part of the systematic kidnappings that Pablo Escobar has been planning to force the government to eliminate extradition to the United States. While Maruja has to manage to stay safe and sound under the custody of a hitman nicknamed "El Monje", Alberto is forced to negotiate with his enemies, those who tried to assassinate him a few years ago.
But Maruja is not the only victim, along with her, a group of journalists have been kidnapped, among them Diana Turbay, a well-known journalist and daughter of a former president. Diana was kidnapped along with some fellow journalists who work for the news program she directs. Diana feels guilty for having led her employees into the lion's den, because in this macabre game the most valuable lives are those of the powerful, those who serve Escobar to corner the government; the others, those of her colleagues, can vanish at a moment's notice. While Alberto is forced to deviate from the institutional path to get closer to Pablo Escobar, Maruja and the other hostages try to maintain hope at all costs.
